Virtual Reality Tour

Transporting students to FedUni.

Federation University in Ballarat had a problem, their location 150km outside Melbourne made it difficult for potential students to view their world-class facilities and beautiful environment. Partnering with Etch, Space66 created a VR experience which transported prospects to FedUni and took them on a tour of the campus and Ballarat. We wanted to capture the unique aspects of University life in Ballarat; the tranquility of Lake Wendouree, the space and freedom of the campus and the wide range of facilities available to students with a wide range of interests.

Shooting on site with students of the campus provided an interesting challenge as they sometimes struggled to keep a straight face and act natural despite only having time in-between classes. 24 different locations were filmed across 3 days with hundreds of different students involved, and we all benefited from the guidance of FedUni’s brilliant lecturers.

…I could have filmed the look on her face when she took the goggles off, as she looked completely blown away and wanted to sign up then and there. We had a constant response like this over the weekend with people being really impressed by the VR tour.

A lot of care was taken in crafting a film specifically for a VR experience, where different rules for pace, editing, movement, music and effects apply. The pace of the edit needs to be considerably slower and mis en scene perfect in every direction. Post-production involved stitching together around 50 different shots, syncing all the audio and removing cameras, crew and shadows from the footage. The music is a licensed track edited to crescendo at the right times and propel the action forward throughout.

GearVR App

A custom-built application was built with Unity to run the experience on Samsung GearVR devices. Building the app from the ground up allowed us to design the on-boarding experience, user interface and configure the built-in navigation resulting in an experience that could be picked-up and played by anyone at anytime, even first time VR users.

After taking in sunrise across Lake Wendouree and being on-board with a rowing team, prospects are introduced to the two campuses and asked to choose which faculty they plan to study in. This allowed us to present a tour specific to the interests of each student; Nursing, Science & Technology, Arts and Undecided. The finished film will continue to be shown at various expos across Australia and Asia, showcasing FedUni to prospective students and removing a large barrier to increasing enrolments.
